Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women remains understudied, under-recognized, underdiagnosed and undertreated. Initiatives such as the Women and Cardiovascular Disease Commission help to identify sex and gender-related gaps in research, care and outcomes and to guide next steps in addressing them. This article highlights important aspects of the Commission report and expands on the evidence and proposed strategies for reducing the global burden of CVD in women. Furthermore, the article explores the benefits of cross-specialty collaborations for the treatment and prevention of CVD in women and discusses the impact of gender-related disparities in academic cardiology.
