Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was detected in whole saliva and in gingival crevicular fluid of 28 (90 per cent) of 31 seropositive patients. No correlation was found between the presence of the antigen and blood in saliva or with the gingival state of health. Thus, HBsAg appears to reach saliva via the crevicular fluid.
