The application of new pathophysiologic information to the treatment of diarrheal diseases has greatly enhanced the outlook for millions of young patients in many developing countries. This article outlines the basis and nature of these therapeutic advances in the belief that they are relevant, not only in Asia and South America, but also throughout North America.
