Informal supports for aging mentally retarded persons.

Available data on the informal support networks of aging mentally retarded persons was reviewed. The availability and role of relatives (especially siblings) and friends was discussed. The problem of strain experienced by the informal support system was considered, drawing from research conducted about nonretarded elderly persons. Areas in need of research were identified throughout the paper.
