To evaluate the potency of Manuka honey UMF +15 against Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). Bacterial resistance is a worldwide problem that is increasing year by year, especially Carbapenem resistance. Alternatives to antibiotics are needed to both reduce costs, and to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, with the ultimate goal of saving lives.
The efficacy of Manuka honey UMF +15 was tested by 2 methods; Well diffusion assay and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against twenty Carbapenem-resistant isolates which collected from Makkah city hospitals during three months of study from 1st of September 2023 up to 1st of December 2023.
The growth of all isolates of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) was severely inhibited by low concentrations of Manuka honey, affecting 25% of isolates at 15% and 75% of isolates at 18% of Manuka honey. In addition, using the honey at different concentrations in a well diffusion assay resulted, as expected, in a variable zone diameter, ranging from large zones(14mm) to small zones (2 mm) according to the concentration of the honey.
This study shows the remarkable antibacterial activity of Manuka honey and suggests that this natural remedy might be used in the future as an alternative treatment option against Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE); however, further clinical trials should be performed to corroborate our initial findings.

通过 2 种方法测试麦卢卡蜂蜜 UMF+15 的功效;采用琼脂扩散法和最低杀菌浓度(MBC)对 20 株从麦加市医院收集的碳青霉烯类耐药分离株进行检测,研究时间为 2023 年 9 月 1 日至 12 月 1 日,共 3 个月。
麦卢卡蜂蜜可显著抑制所有碳青霉烯类耐药肠杆菌科(CRE)分离株的生长,低浓度的麦卢卡蜂蜜即可抑制 25%的分离株,15%的麦卢卡蜂蜜可抑制 75%的分离株。此外,在琼脂扩散法中使用不同浓度的蜂蜜,根据蜂蜜的浓度,预期会产生不同大小的抑菌环,抑菌环直径范围从大环(14mm)到小环(2mm)。
本研究表明麦卢卡蜂蜜具有显著的抗菌活性,并表明这种天然疗法可能在未来被用作治疗碳青霉烯类耐药肠杆菌科(CRE)的替代方案;然而,还需要进行进一步的临床试验来证实我们的初步发现。
