Bactericidal cationic peptides involved in bacterial antagonism and host defence.

There are numerous reports in the literature on small, strongly cationic peptides displaying marked antimicrobial activity. These peptides are produced by bacteria as well as higher organisms, and are thought to be involved in bacterial antagonism or host defence mechanisms.
