A series of patients who received intracavitary streptokinase/streptodornase after thoracotomy or laparotomy were compared with a control group. They showed a highly significant increase in plasma streptokinase tolerance, indicating absorption of the streptokinase from the cavity. Changes in blood coagulation, plasma cell count and immunoglobulins were not observed. In a series of patients with leg ulcers treated with streptokinase/streptodornase by mouth, no increase in plasma streptokinase tolerance was observed, indicating that orally administered streptokinase is not absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract.
