Abstract
An unusual case of hypothyroidism presenting as growth retardation is reported. The clinical features of childhood hypothyroidism and the essential laboratory and special investigations needed to make the diagnosis are discussed. The importance of considering hypothyroidism in the differential diagnosis of short stature is emphasized since early treatment can result in normal mental development and growth. Screening programmes to detect hypothyroidism in the newborn are needed.

报告了一例表现为生长发育迟缓的罕见甲状腺功能减退症病例。讨论了儿童甲状腺功能减退症的临床特征以及做出诊断所需的基本实验室检查和特殊检查。强调了在身材矮小的鉴别诊断中考虑甲状腺功能减退症的重要性，因为早期治疗可使智力发育和生长正常。需要开展新生儿甲状腺功能减退症筛查项目。
