In Ireland, radiographers typically work in the public or private sector. This study investigates the determinants influencing radiographers' employment choices between the public and private sectors, offering employers valuable insights into the key factors that shape these decisions.
An online questionnaire was distributed nationally via social media and email. The survey gathered data on demographics, job acceptance factors, career progression, employee retention, and perceived sector advantages. Descriptive and qualitative analyses were employed.
One hundred and forty-one radiographers completed the survey, representing approximately 4.7 % of state-registered (CORU) radiographers in Ireland. Key differences between sectors emerged: public sector radiographers prioritized pension, job security, and paid sick leave. Private sector radiographers valued salary, benefits, working hour flexibility, and specialized training opportunities. Career progression was viewed more favorably in the private sector (58 %) compared to the public sector (41 %). Both sectors reported similar retention issues, primarily due to heavy workloads and burnout.
Employers can improve radiographer retention by aligning their strategies with the motivations of these professionals. The appeal of the public sector is rooted in stability and comprehensive benefits, whereas the private sector attracts radiographers through flexibility, opportunities for professional development, and higher income potential. By effectively balancing compensation, resources, and incentives, in conjunction with promoting technological innovation, organizations can significantly enhance radiographer retention in Ireland.
