Abstract

OBJECTIVES

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has been incorporated into medical research and numerous applications have been reported since its development in the 1980s. Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery is one of the fields that 3D printing is gaining increasing popularity, as it can contribute to surgical training, patient education and bioengineering. This article aims at providing an updated review of 3D printed models applications in improving ENT trainees' surgical skills.

METHODS

A structured literature search in the PubMed database was conducted followed by a narrative synthesis of articles that met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

RESULTS

Several publications have studied the potential benefits of 3D printed models in Rhinology, Otology, Paediatric ENT and Laryngology. The major advantage is the low cost and quick production of customized models or trainers, according to the needs of the user.

CONCLUSION

The available literature demonstrates the rapid expansion of 3D printing applications in ENT training. Hopefully in the near future, technological advances and more precise designing will allow the production of high fidelity and lower-cost models in any part of the world.

目的

自20世纪80年代三维(3D)打印技术发展以来,已被应用于医学研究,并已有大量应用报道。耳鼻喉(ENT)外科是3D打印技术日益普及的领域之一,因为它有助于手术培训、患者教育和生物工程。本文旨在对3D打印模型在提高耳鼻喉科实习生手术技能方面的应用进行最新综述。

方法

在PubMed数据库中进行结构化文献检索,随后对符合预定义纳入和排除标准的文章进行叙述性综合分析。

结果

多篇出版物研究了3D打印模型在鼻科学、耳科学、儿科耳鼻喉科和喉科学中的潜在益处。主要优点是能够根据用户需求低成本快速生产定制模型或训练器。

结论

现有文献表明3D打印应用在耳鼻喉科培训中迅速扩展。希望在不久的将来,技术进步和更精确的设计将使世界各地都能生产出高保真、低成本的模型。
