Twenty-seven patients with monocular rectus muscle palsy had saccadic velocity studies. In each patient, both the paretic and the nonparetic eye were used for fixation. With the nonparetic eye fixating, the saccadic amplitude was invariably smaller. When equal amplitude saccades were compared, there was no difference in velocity with either eye fixating. It may be preferable to fixate with the paretic eye, since larger amplitude saccades are obtained and the recordings can be easier to interpret.
