Results of cytologic studies are often presented as graphs, distribution curves or profiles. Further analysis of such data requires description of the profiles in numerical form. This article describes the use of moments about the mean, decomposition into Gaussian components and calculation of Fourier coefficients for the characterization of cytologic data profiles. Fully worked numerical examples suitable for execution on a pocket calculator are given.
