In Japan, pediatric organ donation began with a 2009 amendment to the law that removed age restrictions. Recently, the number of pediatric organ donations has increased because of the clarification of procedures to exclude the possibility of abuse, development of acute pediatric care, and promotion of discussions with families through greater recognition of organ donation among medical professionals. Organ transplantation is important based on cost effectiveness. Organ donation is an option if families and medical staff collaborate to provide optimal end-of-life care.
