We have developed a method for the catalytic in situ generation of Rh(I)-phenanthrocyclobutadiene complexes from a cationic Rh(I)/Segphos complex and tetraaryl-diynes. These complexes can undergo cycloaddition reactions with cycloalkenediones and -chloranil, giving different dicarbonyl compounds. In these cycloaddition reactions, dioxygen may facilitate the reductive elimination of rhodacyclopentadienes to Rh(I)-phenanthrocyclobutadiene complexes.
