Clinical applicability, postoperative pain and post-op bleeding using diode lasers are not substantial, except for literature data depicting controversial results.
To assess the efficacy of laser-assisted cosmetic Gingivectomy for smile lift on postoperative pain and bleeding in fixed orthodontic treatment.
The study assessed 60 healthy subjects undergoing orthodontic treatment and aged 17-29 years requiring only gingivectomy for esthetics in the anterior maxillary region. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups of 30 subjects each as Group I was experimental and underwent laser-assisted surgery and Group II as traditional surgery with a scalpel. The bleeding rate after surgery was assessed using WHO bleeding criteria. VAS (visual analog scale) was used to assess postsurgical pain immediately after surgery and 2 hours after surgery in subjects who took analgesics.
Mean bleeding rates were 1.13 and 0.34 in conventional scalpel surgery and laser groups, respectively, which was significantly lesser with laser with < 0.05.VAS scores in the experimental laser group were 0, showing no postoperative pain and 1 in the conventional surgery group mean pain of 5.2 from 10. The difference in VAS1 values in the control and experimental groups was statistically significant with < 0.001.
The present study concludes that a 940 nm laser is a promising tool for the reduction of postoperative pain and postoperative bleeding in subjects that need cosmetic smile lift surgeries after orthodontic treatment.
