Cancer caregiving presents significant psychological and emotional challenges. While healthcare workers (HCWs) possess medical expertise, their dual role as both professionals and caregivers may impose additional burdens. This study examines the psychological distress and caregiving burden among HCWs and non-HCWs caring for oncology patients.
A cross-sectional study was conducted with 83 caregivers (46 HCWs, 37 non-HCWs) of oncology patients receiving treatment at a tertiary hospital. Participants completed sociodemographic surveys and psychological assessments, including the Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scales, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Resilience Scale for Adults.
Both HCWs and non-HCWs exhibited significantly higher depression and anxiety levels compared to healthy controls. No significant differences were found in burnout or psychological resilience between caregiver groups. However, HCWs reported additional stress due to professional expectations, managing medical decisions, and coordinating care. Despite their expertise, HCWs expressed a strong need for emotional and informational support.
HCW caregivers face unique role conflicts and burdens beyond those of non-HCWs. Addressing their specific challenges through tailored psychosocial interventions and institutional support is crucial for improving caregiver well-being and patient care. Future research should explore long-term coping mechanisms and support strategies for HCW caregivers in oncology settings.
