The continuous degradation of the environment requires us to change our current poor eco-friendly behaviors towards more pro-environmental actions. Hence, it is essential to understand the factors promoting pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs). To this end, this study was designed to investigate the relationship between moral quotient (MQ) and PEBs mediated by the sense of obligation of university students engaged in co-curricular activities.
A convenience sample of 683 university students was recruited as study participants. Pro-Environmental Behavior Scale (PEBS) and Moral Quotient Questionnaire (MQQ) originally developed by Janmaimool and Khajohnmanee (2020) were translated into Bangla and the factor structures and validities were determined. Mediation analysis was employed to examine the role of sense of obligation between the relationship of MQ and PEBs. Furthermore, hierarchical regression analysis was run to test whether pro-environmental behavior was predicted by the sense of obligation, global citizenship, and moral quotient. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed to study the effects of co-curricular engagement on MQ and PEBs.
Exploratory factor analyses revealed a single-factor structure for both PEBS and MQQ and the same factor retention emerged through parallel analyses. Good internal consistency reliabilities for both measures were evident through Cronbach's alphas and McDonald's omegas. The concurrent validity of the Bangla PEBS and MQQ was confirmed through the positive association of PEBs with global citizenship and a positive relationship of MQ with the sense of obligation. Importantly, the results indicated that sense of obligation partially mediated the relationship between MQ and PEBs. Regression analysis also found the sense of obligation and MQ as the strong predictors of PEBs. ANCOVA results showed that co-curricular engagement had significant effects on moral quotient and pro-environmental behaviors of the students after controlling for the effects of academic performance.
Altogether, it can be suggested that universities should focus on enhancing students' environment-related co-curricular activities to promote their sense of moral obligation on environmental issues, ultimately leading to eco-friendly behaviors for a sustainable environment.
环境的持续恶化要求我们改变当前不利于生态环保的行为,采取更有利于环境的行动。因此,了解促进亲环境行为(PEBs)的因素至关重要。为此,本研究旨在调查道德商数(MQ)与亲环境行为之间的关系,并以参与课外活动的大学生的义务感作为中介变量。
招募了683名大学生作为便利样本参与研究。将Janmaimool和Khajohnmanee(2020年)最初编制的《亲环境行为量表》(PEBS)和《道德商数问卷》(MQQ)翻译成孟加拉语,并确定其因素结构和效度。采用中介分析来检验义务感在道德商数与亲环境行为关系中的作用。此外,进行层次回归分析以检验义务感、全球公民意识和道德商数是否能预测亲环境行为。进行协方差分析(ANCOVA)以研究课外活动参与对道德商数和亲环境行为的影响。
探索性因素分析揭示了PEBS和MQQ均为单因素结构,通过平行分析得出相同的因素保留情况。通过克朗巴哈系数和麦克唐纳ω系数,两种测量方法均显示出良好的内部一致性信度。孟加拉语PEBS和MQQ的同时效度通过亲环境行为与全球公民意识的正相关以及道德商数与义务感的正相关得到证实。重要的是,结果表明义务感部分中介了道德商数与亲环境行为之间的关系。回归分析还发现义务感和道德商数是亲环境行为的有力预测因素。ANCOVA结果表明,在控制学业成绩的影响后,课外活动参与对学生的道德商数和亲环境行为有显著影响。
总体而言,可以建议大学应专注于加强与环境相关的学生课外活动,以增强他们在环境问题上的道德义务感,最终促成有利于可持续环境的环保行为。
