Abstract
•Maternal trauma and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS) were associated with lower postpartum maternal functioning.•Postpartum PTS symptoms were related to maternal self-care/needs but not related to maternal competency or infant care.•Mothers with higher postpartum PTS symptoms showed decreased ability to meet their own physical and emotional needs.
