Exposure of erythrocytes to nonpermeable cryoprotector solution (PEO-1500, sucrose) with reduced NaCl content resulted in the development of chlorine diffusion potential, calculated by the degree of medium acidulation. This was accompanied by the loss of intracellular K+ and the increase in hemolysis upon freezing and thawing.
