A Case Report of Recalcitrant, Extensive Multifocal Epithelial Hyperplasia Treated by Electrocauterization.

Multifocal epithelial hyperplasia is a very rare, benign, contagious disease of the oral mucosa caused by infection with a specific genotype of human papillomavirus. It presents with asymptomatic, smooth-surfaced papules or nodules in the mouth of children and adults. In many cases of multifocal epithelial hyperplasia, a "wait-and-see" approach may be sufficient. However, more aggressive treatments, such as destructive modalities, may be necessary for extensive lesions. Multiple destructive modalities have been used in the treatment of multifocal epithelial hyperplasia with variable results; here we report the significant effect of electrocautery in clearing widespread mucosal lesions of multifocal epithelial hyperplasia in a 15-year-old male patient who had multiple sessions of cryotherapy without clearance.
