The Role of Moral Incongruence in the Relationship Between Pornography Use, Moral Struggles, Sexual Shame, and Couple Satisfaction for Pornography Users in the USA.

A discrepancy between beliefs about pornography and one's pornography-related behavior can facilitate perceived pornography problems. This cross-sectional study in the USA sought to investigate the role of moral struggle in the pathway between pornography use, sexual shame, and relationship satisfaction, moderated by moral disapproval, using a sample of pornography users in committed relationships (N = 224). Findings support a moderated mediation model in which moral disapproval moderated the effect of pornography use on moral struggles, which subsequently had effects on sexual shame and relationship satisfaction. This suggests that intrapersonal and interpersonal effects of pornography use are transmitted through perceived moral struggles in the context of moral disapproval.
