Abstract

OBJECTIVES

To assess the accuracy of a wireless intraoral scanner (IOS) in obtaining digital impressions of post spaces with different remaining tooth heights (RTHs) and post space depths (PSDs).

METHODS

Sixty standard resin teeth of the right maxillary central incisor were endodontically treated and prepared after being fixed on a maxillary model. The teeth were divided into 2 groups based on the RTH, including 2 and 4 mm. Then each group was divided into 3 subgroups based on the prepared PSD, including 6, 8, and 10 mm (n = 10). All specimens were scanned using Trios 5 and used as test data. Additionally, conventional impressions were taken and subsequently scanned using a laboratory scanner to serve as reference data. The test and reference data were fitted, generating a deviation distribution map of post space. Root mean square (RMS) for 3D and 2D comparisons, along with the proportion of green region (defined as areas within 100 μm deviation in 3D discrepancy), were recorded for accuracy evaluation. 3D RMS values were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), while one-way ANOVA was applied to the proportions of green regions and 2D RMS values (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

As PSD increased or RTH decreased, the 3D RMS values increased, while the proportion of green region decreased. The 2D RMS values ​​gradually decreased from the cervical to the apical regions in all subgroups. All 3D and 2D RMS values remained below 100 μm, except for the apical region in the RTH-2 mm/PDS-10 mm subgroup. In addition, only the RTH-2 mm/PDS-10 mm subgroup had a proportion of green region below 85 %.

CONCLUSIONS

The accuracy of wireless IOS in scanning post space is significantly influenced by PSD and RTH, with accuracy declining as PSD increases or RTH decreases. Furthermore, all results were within clinically acceptable error values, except for the apical region in the RTH-2 mm/PDS-10 mm subgroup.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Trios 5 is effectively suitable for post space scanning when RTH is ≥ 4 mm and PSD is ≤ 10 mm, or when RTH is ≥ 2 mm and PSD is ≤ 8 mm.
