Failures of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy do occur but are not often reported. This paper reports a series of 291 attempted arthroscopic partial meniscectomies. Follow-up was achieved in 268 patients; 4 required arthrotomy initially, 22 failed to benefit from treatment and a further 15 required two arthroscopic operations before improvement occurred. The main reasons for failure were initial inadequate assessment and treatment of the meniscal tear, the presence of dual pathology and the development of a second tear in the meniscal remnant.
