Sixty-eight paraplegics from three hospitals in western Nigeria were interviewed using a semistructured questionnaire. The unemployment rate among subjects was high, though much higher among the lower class subjects than among those from the upper class. Frequency of travel and sports participation was low in both groups. A high proportion of the lower class group was dissatisfied with their current circumstances. The authors believe that the problems faced by paraplegics could be significantly reduced if adequate resources were allocated to rehabilitation strategies.
