Abstract

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE

Infectious diseases, especially those arising from zoonotic pathogens like Bacillus anthracis, represent substantial public health threats. This case underscores the dangers linked to soil exposure in endemic regions and the challenges involved in treating cutaneous anthrax.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 50-year-old woman developed severe infections in her left index and right middle fingers after gardening in an anthrax-endemic area. What started as mild symptoms progressed to tissue damage with swelling, redness, and a cutaneous anthrax lesion; a biopsy confirmed cutaneous anthrax.

DISCUSSION

The patient received surgical debridement and five maggot therapy sessions, which effectively reduced bacteria and promoted healing. This highlights the benefit of combining surgical and biological treatments, emphasizing the importance of prompt diagnosis and intervention in zoonotic infections.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this case underscores the necessity for heightened public awareness regarding soil exposure risks in endemic areas and the effective management of cutaneous anthrax. The combination of surgical and biological treatment approaches can significantly enhance patient outcomes in complex infectious diseases.
