Abstract

The Chhilchhila Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a vital wintering ground and key stopover for the Central Asian Flyway, providing essential habitats for numerous migratory bird species. Fortnightly field surveys for 2 years were conducted periodically from October 2022 to September 2024, employing line-cum-point transect counts across four transects of the study area. A total of 62 winter migrant avian species from 10 orders, 26 families, and 42 genera were recorded. The order Passeriformes was dominant (30 species), followed by Charadriiformes (12 species) and Anseriformes (10 species). Contrarily, Columbiformes, Gruiformes, Pelecaniformes, Piciformes, and Psittaciformes were the least abundant avian orders. The families Anatidae and Scolopacidae presented the highest species richness (RDi = 16.13), emphasizing the importance of wetland habitats for waterfowl and waders. Species richness varied across transects (T1 = 17, T2 = 49, T3 = 17, T4 = 43), reflecting habitat diversity. T2-T4 transects presented high species similarity (Cj = 0.53, β = 0.69), whereas T1-T3 transects presented low species similarity (Cj = 0.13, β = 0.23) due to habitat variations. Various diversity indices were calculated, and rarefaction analysis was performed to evaluate avian biodiversity and monitoring of ecological changes in avian populations over time. Conservation analysis as per State of India's Birds report throughout India classified 16 high-priority species and 18 moderate-priority species, whereas IUCN listed 61 least-concern species and one vulnerable (common pochard) species. The IUCN global population trends are declining for 22 species, signaling conservation needs for avian fauna. In addition, land use/land cover (LULC) changes significantly influence ecological habitats and biodiversity, especially in the Chhilchhila Wildlife Sanctuary in India, for positive human impact and conservation of migratory avian fauna.
