Abstract

Complement fixation inhibition studies with oligosaccharides of known molecular structure have shown that the group antigens are determined by identical structural sequences in the lipopolysaccharides of the different serotypes. The epitopes of group factors 4 and 3,4 are internal sequences of α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→4)-L-rhamnose and α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→6)--acetyl-D-glucosamine respectively.
