It is attempted to show that there are three characteristic turning-points in the history of veterinary medicine, which have directed attention from within outwards. The responsibility of veterinary medicine in regard to public health, the development of diagnosis and treatment and the welfare of animals make it clear that veterinary medicine is an independent science having its own views on the problems concerned, resulting from its origins and purpose. The fact that these views admittedly could not be developed without co-operating with other disciplines is evidence in itself that veterinary medicine has grown up.
