The incorporation of S-sodium sulphate into normal murine hepatic mucopolysaccharide was studied quantitatively and qualitatively. This incorportion is markedly increased by the induction of acute and chronic liver injury with carbon tetrachloride (CCl). On the basis of chromatographic analysis and specific degradation procedures, it is evident that such injury induces an exaggeration in the synthesis of chondroitin sulphate A and/or C and heparan sulphate. There is no evidence for the presence of dermatan sulphate or keratan sulphate in normal or damaged liver or for passive binding of S-sulphate to hepatic tissue.
