Abstract
One hundred and thirty unselected patients undergoing appendicectomy were treated with topical ampicillin powder or topical placebo powder (lactose) before closing the wound. The postoperative wound infection rates were 3% in the ampicillin-treated group and 24% in the control group, a significant difference. This difference was not influenced by the degree of inflammation in the appendix. No side-effects of treatment were observed.

130例未经过挑选的接受阑尾切除术的患者在关闭伤口前接受了局部氨苄青霉素粉末或局部安慰剂粉末（乳糖）治疗。氨苄青霉素治疗组的术后伤口感染率为3%，而对照组为24%，差异显著。这种差异不受阑尾炎症程度的影响。未观察到治疗的副作用。
