In a study of 81 pregnant mothers and their newborn infants the maternal serum transferrin concentration at about 24 weeks of gestation was shown to have a low but significant correlation with infant birth weight (r=0.33; P<0.01). Maternal undernutrition is suggested as a possible cause of low serum transferrin levels.
