Scientists and clinicians concerned with underwater vision have not considered the relationship between chromatic aberration, water color, and the refractive state of the eye. Recent research indicates that the red end of the visible spectrum is in focus when the eye is not accommodating. On this basis, and on the basis of the monochromatic nature of clear acquatic environments, it is suggested that divers may be myopic by as much as 1 D when underwater.
