The impact of alcoholism on family life is of major interest to the alcohol field. A comparison between male and female alcoholics' perceptions of their present and ideal family lives was conducted through use of a self-report questionnaire. The data revealed no difference between them regarding their perceptions of their present lives, but significant differences in their perceptions of the ideal family environment. The generic impact of alcoholism and the changing sex roles of men and women are given as possible explanations for these results.
