An increase in Ca concentration in a frog taste cell by application of respiratory inhibitors and ionophore A23187 to Ringer solution perfusing the lingual artery led to a large suppression of the taste nerve responses to quinine, ethanol and acids. The responses to CaCl2, L-threonine, D-galactose and distilled water were unchanged or increased.
