[Does tocolysis with fenoterol cause myocardial necrosis?].

Since the beginning of its therapeutic application in tocolysis, possible substance specific myocardium-toxic influences of betamimetic drugs have been discussed. They have been charged for fulminant progressive lung edemas in pregnancy as well as cases of infant mortality. After many years of broad clinical application of betamimetics in tocolysis, especially of fenoterol, and after employment of various diagnostic methods including commensurate animal experimental examinations, we have found that fenoterol in common clinical doses does not cause myocardium necrosis in both mother and child. Under strict consideration of contra-indications and regard of clear indication principals with consequent surveillance, tocolysis with beta-mimetics maintains eminent perinatologic importance with regard to reducing premature birth with all its specific risks for the newborn.
