There is an extensive descriptive literature concerning both the clinical and pathologic features of myelofibrosis as it occurs in the setting of myeloproliferative disease. These initial chapters of this book have reviewed these aspects of the problem, and will therefore serve as a background against which recent new advances in the biology of collagen in particular, and connective tissue in general, can be viewed. These newer advances will constitute the remainder of this book.
