Comprehension abilities of ten normal infants and ten infants with cleft lip and palate were investigated in an interactive environment. All subjects were twelve to thirteen months old and were matched with respect to race, sex, socio-economic status, hearing acuity and dialect spoken in the home. Videotapes were made while mothers and their children engaged in play. Analysis of these one-hour interactions revealed no significant difference between the two groups on measures of comprehension skills.
