In two identical twins, one developed dermatomyositis and the other systemic lupus erythematosus. The presence of different connective tissue diseases in identical twins might support the theory that one or more genes underly a basic predisposition to developing autoimmune responses, while other genes or environmental factors may influence the expression of a specific disease category.
