Odontogenic infections are caused by a complex ecosystem of anaerobic and aerobic organisms that arise from the indigenous oral flora. No specific organism or combination of organisms appears to be essential to the disease process. Evacuation of pus and removal of necrotic tissue are the essential steps in treating such infections. Antibiotics are adjuncts to definitive therapy; penicillin is the empiric drug of choice.
