Sagging of the breast may occur within the first year after mammaplasty. This may be prevented by shortening the distance between the areola and submammary fold to less than 25% of the distance between the sternal notch and the new site of the nipple. If this manoeuvre is combined with other modifications in relation to the lateral portion of the breast and the pedicles of the nipple, the results of Strömbeck's mammaplasty can be improved.
