Metastatic Serratia marcescens endophthalmitis.

Serratia marcescens, a gram-negative rod belonging to the family of the Enterobacteriaceae may be the cause of various ophthalmic infections, especially in patients with decreased resistance. The course of these ocular infections is always severe. This is the first description of a metastatic S. marcescens endophthalmitis. It developed in a patient with chronic lymphatic leukemia after prostatectomy. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to S. marcescens, an organism of increasing importance as an ocular pathogen.
