The increase of PCO2 inhibits the averaged ERG in monkeys. Recordings with microelectrodes of the local ERG in the inner and outer plexiform layers of the perfused frog retina (rana ridibunda) revealed that the effect of CO2 was already present at the first synaptic transmission point in the retina, i.e., between photoreceptors and bipolar cells.
