Taking into account the factors of local bioavailability, the phenomenon of tachyphylaxis and biorhythm as well as the skin and the internal production of cortisone, side effects can be reduced by the intermittent use of topical corticoid preparations and reduced dosage. Atopic dermatitis is taken as an example to explain some corticoid-saving measures during long-term treatment.
