From my very beginning in psychiatry, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann was one of my ideals. Her writing on psychotherapy, free of jargon and convolutions, made it possible to attempt treatment of even the very severely ill. She held forth the possibility of intervening in the life course of the schizophrenic, of understanding this person in distress and turning him in a new direction. She made her therapy a mutual adventure of therapist and patient as they explored a new realm and a new world.
