The incidence and mortality from cutaneous melanoma have increased around the world in the past few decades. The exact cause of melanoma is unknown, but its epidemiological features strongly relate its occurrence to sun exposure. Evidence which supports the causal role of solar ultraviolet radiation is described, and factors which may also be important in the induction of melanoma are suggested.
