Bitches, queens and prostaglandins.

Luteolysis can be obtained in bitches by prolonged administration of PGF2 alpha resulting in abortion in pregnant bitches. A prostaglandin analogue (TPT) can induce fetal resorption or abortion depending upon the time of administration. In an investigation comprising a few bitches, PGF2 alpha has given encouraging results for treatment of uterine disorders. In the queen prostaglandin can induce abortion and parturition, and it has, when administered during a long period, been used for treatment of pyometra. Irrespective of the preparation and dosage the administration of prostaglandin is accompanied by side effects lasting for up to 3 hours, and therefore further investigations are needed before prostaglandins can be recommended for use in bitches and queens.
