The dynamics of neurological changes was analysed in 34 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome from the standpoint of the influence of selected factors on late effects of the disease. The level of CSF protein at the time of maximal intensity of the symptoms reflected the dynamics of the disease, but had no prognostic importance. The duration of the acute phase had an effect on late results but was modified by treatment with steroids. On the basis of partial correlations of the studied material it was found that the higher was the dose of steroids given in the acute phase of the disease the lower was the degree of permanent damage to the peripheral nervous system. This suggests that the most effective method was administration of steroids in high daily doses and the duration of this treatment should be made dependent on the course and the intensity of the acute phase in a given case.
