The problem of curriculum development for the medical illustration student is dealt with by emphasizing the process of curriculum construction rather than content. A competency-based educational program with achievement measured through criteria-referenced examination is suggested. It is believed the system will encourage the development of meaningful and relevant learning experiences aimed at helping the student attain necessary competencies for effective professional practice. Evaluation measures will reflect the degree to which the student has achieved those competencies and will determine whether the graduate meets professional entry-level standards.
