A detailed investigation was made of the direct effects of histamine, serotonin, carbachol, isoproterenol, salbutamol and terbutaline, alone and in the presence of specific antagonists in isolated lung parenchyma strip preparations of cat and dog. The effects of specific antigen were also observed in lung strips of antigen-sensitized cat and dogs, as well as the effects of feline and canine slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (STS-A). Preparations from cat and dog produced consistent responses between lung strips from one animal, as well as from animal to animal. It is suggested that this tissue may be a useful model in which to study the effects of immediate (Type I) hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis and those of potential bronchodilators.
