As was to be expected, the duodenal juice in 3 infants with extra-hepatic biliary atresia was different from that in 43 healthy infants similarly investigated. Following the injection of Secretin and Pancreozymin, the amylase and bicarbonate values were normal, while the trypsin activity in the 3 patients was significantly reduced. Trypsinogen could not be found in the duodenal juice but was presesnt as Trypsin which was mainly inactive. It is concluded that the dissociated pancreatic insufficiency is caused by a lack of bile secretion.
